NLC TIme 2011! yes that time of the year

Advisors: We need to start planning even though State isn't done yet. Most realize we will have a quick turn around time. In reviewing the NLC schedule June 28-July 1, Konrad has got us a bus quote of approx $300 per rider; if chapters think they would prefer to fly then will have to schedule and watch air rates. I have been watching and Moline airport, Delta airlines is looking around $300...but creeping up, probably because of gas going up. Also, chapters may want to go a day early, Alburnett will be June 26th. The tentative state plans are: Mon June 27th Disney all day (4 park hopper with fast pass-one day $136 and two day is $216) Tue June 28th chapter free time (8a.m.-2p.m.) then events start and opening 7p.m. Wed June 29th events all day 7:15-5 and 5:30-6:30 Regional meeting Possible Iowa FBLA large group dinner 7:30 at Downtown Disney Thu June 30 events until 2p.m then a choice: second disney day, universal/Isles of Adventure (one day two park ticket $112), or Disney Quest in downtown disney ($36) Fri July 1 regional meeting 9:15-10:45a.m. then on the Atlantic side Cocoa beach 11:30-4:30 (bus cost approx $25) or as referenced in the National brochure "gator tours". Awards Ceremony 6-9. Sat July 2 travel back to the Great State of IOWA! Please respond back to this blog with thoughts or send Mr. Kuhlers a note through e-mail by April 1st, thanks.

  1. Thanks for setting up the blog -- any ideas of where or costs of hotel rooms? Would bus riders be there for a Sunday night motel stay -- or still traveling? How long does it take on a bus anyway?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yes, we are on International Drive so will have public transportation to Disney and Universal, but transporation to Kennedy, beach or airboats will cost apporx 20-35 additional per student. If those are things we want to do Konrad will coordinate the transporation. Hotel rooms I'm telling students $50 per night with 4 in a room so $200 per room per night. I'm telling my kids $300 for room 6 nights at $50/ea. Good questions!

  3. So would the bus only be open to students who won a place to NLC at State. I was talking to some other advisers who allow students who are excited about the group to go and compete in the open events and/or participate in the leadership institute?

    ReplyDelete
  4. What if we did the day at the beach on the 28th. Seems a little rushed right before awards night.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Smith-
that is your school policy. At Alburnett students can not go unless they are competing, my theory on that is I get a better effort at state. Students try harder and don't blow off, I have a lot of students that want to go to Nationals, so I think it works? But up to you-others may let students go as there are "open" tests at Nationals. Your school policy and if no policy I would suggest developing one quick!?! Others thoughts?

  6. Lou-
Was trying to remember what we did in Anaheim? and keep it the same, was Anaheim rushed? Beach on the 28th, we would have to be back for 2p.m. (I believe) testing for Parliamentary Procedure? Correct me if I'm wrong on that? What about June 30th? Just thinking out loud. 28th could work?

  7. Northeast is planning on flying to Orlando. AirTran runs direct from Moline on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Therefore, we'd probably do a Monday-Saturday, unless I can get a better deal on a different airline at some point in time.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I have some students that just returned from Orlando and did all the parks. He said the Islands of Adventure was the best. Has anyone ever been there? Thoughts? I'll be researching it online in the next couple of days.

  9. Anaheim was rushed!! Not enough time at the beach.

The Guide is online now too.

    Iowa Hotel is Rosen Plaza
    Single/Double: $160 Triple/Quad: $170

    ReplyDelete
  10. All Hilton Hotel rooms are subject to a 12.5% sales and occupancy tax. Rosen Hotels have an additional 1.13% Orange County Convention Center surcharge, for a total of 13.63% which does not apply to tax exemptions.

  11. Bettendorf is planning on flying. Are any schools interested in Sea World? Does anyone know if our hotel gives transporation to that park as well? We are planning on leaving the 26th as well. Thanks for putting this together Kyle. Hope you had a great birthday.

    ReplyDelete
  12. So do we have 13.63% for our hotel?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Amanda

Bellevue would be interested to fly as well if we have anyone qualify. Maybe we could get on the same flights? I am planning to book flights on Wednesday after SLC depending on the price.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sea World is very close to our hotel, convention and visitors bureau said walking distance? but that could be a mile or two? Next time I talk with them will ask.

  15. For transportation there is a public bus system called the "Lynx" and route 111 is what goes to Disney and Universal and Downtown Disney. Each time you ride it costs $2.00, but can get a week pass for $16.00 with unlimited riding.

The pick up for the Lynx is right outside of the Hilton hotel which is very close to the Rosen Hotel (where Iowa is)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Susan-is the 13.63% a question about hotel tax? Kyle

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, it was in reply to Dana's post. She said it doesn't apply to tax exemptions but I wasn't sure what that meant.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Airfares have dropped drastically today for 2 days, please see your e-mail for the link or send me a note and will forward you the link. Kuhlers

  19. Bellevue will be arriving in Orlando on Monday, June 27. I am looking at booking a flight out of Moline. Only $275 right now, but I am waiting to get confirmation from 1 student.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Northeast is attending. We will fly...if I can still get cheap flights! I know the AirTran special ends at 11:59pm Thursday.

Northeast is also considering staying at the suggested Clarion hotel. My students want the cheapest deal and don't mind staying at another hotel.

  21. Can we have the state dinner at Pirate's Dinner Adventure? Seems like a Medieval Times but with pirates and their ship!

    http://www.piratesdinneradventure.com/index.php?page=Pirates-Dinner-Adventure-Orlando-Florida

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks good-we too are considering the Clarion, meeting with students today. Currently working on Alburnett students going? Hopefully will have final list by Fri/Sat! Kuhlers

    ReplyDelete
  23. Amanda--I think the Prirate's Dinner sounds good!

    ReplyDelete
  24. For those who are flying in Orlando, how are you getting to your hotel? The shuttle service offered through FBLA runs $30 a person. The bus system (Lynx) is $2. I'm assuming you can bring luggage on the bus system??

    ReplyDelete
  25. Corning is planning on flying but we are having a hard time finding good rates for airfare for 16 people. If anyone has any good suggestions please let me know.

After discussing it with my kids we will be staying at the Rosen hotel as originally planned. I was shocked to hear this but my kids would rather pay more to be able to meet people from different states. So we will be booking rooms through Konrad at the Rosen Hotel.

As far as sightseeing goes (unless we change our minds between now & then).... we are planning on going to Universal & Universal's Islands of Adventure on Monday, Disney Quest & the state meal on Wednesday (Amanda the Pirates idea sounds cool), Seaworld & Aquatica on Thursday, and Cocoa Beach with Iowa on Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Amanda.....after looking at the website more, would we still be able to go to Disney Quest if we go eat at the Pirates Dinner Adventure. It shows that the only time available is at 7:30 pm.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I still don't have my students finalized yet! So much for the Fri/Sat timeframe. I'm waiting on an event that once decided will let all the chips (students) fall into place!

We may want to look at the dinner on Wednesday then move Disney Quest to Thursday or schedule at another time. I had never heard of this Disney Quest but comes highly reccommended by the Orlando CVB for high schoolers! My students looked up website and looks cool! If the dinner is at 7:30 and goes for 2 hours would be 9:30, would be good to Disney another night. Thoughts

My students are meeting Wed, April 27th to determine hotel and attractions! Will post on Wednesday after I know, Kuhlers

  28. Linn-Mar will be flying. Looking to do Allegant out of Des Moines. We will be staying at the Rosen.

Our group doesn't have any tests on Tuesday, so they are thinking Disney until the state meeting. Then Universal after finals on Thursday. Plan to join the group for the beach.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We have four students; 3 boys and 1 girl. We are still deciding if Kathy attends or if it is just me. My family is going too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wednesday night for the dinner sounds good to me. The tickets are sold for $61.95 but you can get $10 off if you buy them online. I'm not sure if all Iowa chapters will want to spend that much on dinner and a show or not. I'm sure my kids would be up for it if everyone else is.

My kids did sound very interested in Disney Quest so they would want to go sometime while we are down there. Thursday would work for our schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That dinner was just a suggestion. Doesn't have to be the Iowa dinner. It is pricey and not everyone would be able to afford it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Linn-Mar is in on the State Meal too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Northeast is staying at the Clarion. Our room is finalized.

We are also flying on AirTran to Orlando on Monday, June 27th out of Moline. We are returning Saturday, July 2nd. Flights have already been booked.

We are also registered for the conference so Northeast is ready to go!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bellevue has airfare purchased. Leaving Moline on Monday and returning on Saturday. We are taking 2 boys. I am looking for a chapter that needs 2 boys to fill a room. Any takers?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I know Clinton is looking for a spot for their one boy and one girl. You can contact Angie Mojeiko - amojeiko@clintonia.org

    ReplyDelete
  36. Bettendorf if flying, planning on booking thoose fares tomorrow or Thursday -- waiting on permission slips before I purchase the tickets.

We are staying at the Rosen. As far as activiites we are up for the state dinner but will get back to you on final plans. I think we plan to leave Sunday and come back Saturday. So Monday we may be doing universal/ Islands of Adventure

I am the only advisor attending. We are taking 10 students and I am brining my kids ( 6 and 1) -- yikes what am I in for!

    Will post more on specifics!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fairfield is flying Allegian air Des Moines to Sanford/Orlando. Monday June 27 to Saturday June 2.

Fairfield is staying at the Rosen.
I am going to request with Konrad that we need 2 girls and 1 guy to fill our rooms -- anybody needs that as well?

ALso, as an adviser - I am still looking for a female roommate -- thanks -- Diane Goudy

    ReplyDelete
  38. CHS & West Dubuque will be at the Clarion flying out Mon. from Moline and returning Sat. I'm looking for 1 more girl in a room to reduce costs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Eagle Grove will be flying.

I agree with Dana that the beach was too rushed on Friday. We need to do the beach on Monday so there is more time. Believe it is an hour drive there.

Like the idea of the pirate dinner. Sounds like fun and great for a large group. We haven't done something like this for awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bellevue will stay wherever I can get 2 boys to fit in to a room. Help! Also, we would be up for the dinner. Just let me know exact time & place. I am also bringing my 7 year old son!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Alburnett students will be discussing the possibilities of doing community service in Orlando on Tuesday morning from 9-noon, something like what we did at Nashville. I called the Orlando Convention Bureau and sending me an e-mail with different opportunities. Please let me know if you want me to forward? Kuhlers

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thinking about the beach. We were rushed in California. We could consider going on Tuesday and being back by 2:00 for the evening events. Leave early, looks like an hour drive, around 7:30 or so. Stay until the an hour before the first person has to compete. 5-6 hours

    ReplyDelete
  43. Unless, we do the beach in the evening on Thursday after the finals and stay late. We could find a resturant in near the beach. Maybe cheaper too.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Diane,

Linn-Mar could use one more guy at the Rosen. And our one girl could easily go with yours. Unless, Konrad has a better idea after all the informaiotn gets turned in.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Creston High School is staying at the Clarion and is hoping to fly but still figuring out the best option on that.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Chariton will be staying at the Rosen. Still working on airfare. I have 3 girls and 3 boys, hoping Konrad can fill the rooms. I'm meeting with students tomorrow to discuss activities while there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Clinton will be booking flights today. We will be arriving on Monday and staying until Saturday. We are going to be staying at the Clarion rooming with Cascade. We have not discussed we activities they want to do , but I only have one girl and one boy so their shouldn't be a lot of questions.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I just sent out some maps of the area and Hilton hotel-where competitive events are located. Please drop me a note if you didn't receive.
    Kuhlers

    ReplyDelete
  49. Bellevue will be flying out on Monday and coming home on Saturday. We will be staying at the Clarion. We haven't discussed side trips yet, but we would like to go with another chapter if possible.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Tonight I will attempt to create a google form/document and share with everyone to input hotel information, arrival times and side trips planned so we can view on one sheet. Kuhlers

    ReplyDelete
  51. You're so thrifty and organized, Kyle! (But I can't seem to get your form to work! haha)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Creston just booked its flight. We are leaving on Monday from Kansas City and coming back from Orlando on Saturday. We haven't discussed exactly what we are doing for the optional excursions. I know my boys want to see some gators and I know I want to go to the Harry Potter theme park. and we all want to go to the beach. I would like my kids to also do the community service that might be arranged while we are down there

    ReplyDelete
  53. I created a spreadsheet in excel and uploaded it to Google then shared it with I believe everyone. If you don't have the shared document please let me know-I may have missed some people.

Anyone can edit this document, so if there is information you want from chapters right click and add column put the heading up there, so advisors can add. Thanks to Ehlers and Smith for helping get set-up so it works. My first attempt failed, but we got it!

Hopefully this can help with planning and coordination of activities. Again shoot me a note if the document is not shared with you.

I will be calling this afternoon about the community service as I have not heard back from Maria at the Orlando Volunteer Center with specific activities for Tuesday morning.

Whew! We are getting there this year seems to be a more planning but I think it is because of the quickness-just seems like more!

  54. If we move the beach day to Tuesday we would only gain more time if the kids taking Parlia, Mr, and Management Information systems didn't go along. Those tests are at 2 and 3. If we left at 7:30 a.m. we would have 4 hours at the beach to return by 2:00. If we go on Friday we have 4 hours and could return by 5:00 for the 6:00 awards. Looks like either way we get the same time unless those kids didn't want to go that have those early tests on Tues.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Either way or we could do both? Beach on Friday and/or beach on Tuesday?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Clarke just booked flights. Flying Southwest from Kansas City. Arrive late Sunday fly out early Sat.
I don't know about our activities yet. I know they are interested in the beach - which we prefer Friday. I know we will do the other activities too but I have not had much time to sit down with them yet - I had to rearrange 3 sets of home ball games in order to leave for a week. We are staying at the Clarion with Alburnett - correct Kuhlers?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Does anyone know if there has been any fianl decision on the beach. Are we going as a group? I know my students were really looking forward to going on Friday. We prefer the end of the week as I have students in Managment Decision Making. No final plans on other days but I am thinkning Universal on Monday and Sea Worls Tuesday or Thursday. We leave on Sunday from Moline and are staying on the Rosen.

  59. Since I have students competing in Parli, we would also prefer Friday for the beach. We have made any decisions on any of our other days. Susan Seuferer

  60. What time is the state meeting on Tuesday?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Bellevue will be participating in the trip to Cocoa Beach on Friday. Does anyone know exactly how much, where we will leave from, and what time?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Bellevue would also like to join everyone for the chapter dinner on Wednesday evening. Do we need to make reservations? Pay in advance?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I will confirm with Konrad, he had a quote for a 47 passenger but at $20 per kid on Friday. It appears we may need two buses. Yes it is still a go and will leave from wherever (sp?) we say. May have one from Rosen and one from Clarion.

The Iowa dinner I will be working on after school is out May 23rd. Guessing will be pay there and will try to arrange in downtown disney, will work with the convention bureau on this. Let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas for the Wed night dinner. It will be later apporx 7:30-8:00 as we will have regional meeting from 5:30 to 6:30. Kuhlers

    ReplyDelete
  64. With the beach if chapters are interested on Tuesday please mark on the google document and can arrange a bus then too! Right now according to the google document it appears all the beachers are on Friday?!?

    ReplyDelete
  65. All:
Please get your beach numbers in the google document by the end of this week, so Konrad can start coordinating the bus or busses for us, thanks.
    Kyle

    ReplyDelete
  66. Winterset will have 7 for the dinner....do we need to get our own tickets or will the be purchased as a group?
We are planning on 7 for the beach.....we will have a suburban so we can go either way....drive or take the charter....whichever is easier

    ReplyDelete
  67. Also, if you are still looking for cheaper disney hopper tickets here is a great way to t get them.....On the nationals activites listing on the national website.....there is an Epcot Disney Leadership Tour on the 28 for $162 each and it includes a 3 day Disney park pass. You can order the tickets and then call the number listed,,,talk to Vera Sour and you can upgrade the 3 day park pass to a hopper for $20 more per person. So for $182 you can have a 3 day disney Hopper pass......GREAT DEAL and get in on the Disney Leadership philosophy!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. At this point I'm open to suggestions/ideas for the dinner. Nothing is decided, what do everyone think about Pirates Dinner Adventure that was mentioned earlier? Next week I'll get a list of options put together and send out or share a google document.

Please though if you have ideas let me know, thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I would like to do the dinner show on Wed night. The cost online is $53.80. You save $5. Maybe there is a group rate. But we probably need to get them ordered. Might be a popular place for FBLA members. The cost is a little high but you get both a dinner and a show.
